Valkyrie, the name of the Englishyacht racing for Americas cup, is deriv-ed from mythology and pronounced Val-kee-ree, with the accent on the secondsyllable. Its meaning is chooser of theslain, from vair, fallen or slain, andkjora, cognate with the old Germankueren, and the Anglo-Saxonx ceosan, tochoose. The .Century Dictionary pro-nounces the word Val-ki-ree, though itgives as the pronunciation of Valkyriathe sound Val-kir-ia. The Valkyries, old Norse Valkyrjur,were attendants and messengers of Odin,or Wodan, the supreme god in Teutonicmythology. The Valkyries were sent toevery battle-field to select such warriorsas were destined to fall, and whom theytouched with the points of their carried the bodies of the slain intriumph to Walhalla, their heavenlyabode.
