The Barbadoes Carpenters settled there in 1647, at whichplace Samuel Carpenter and Joshua his brother joined them in took passage from the Surrey side of the Thames, in a ship boundfor Barbadoes, and hence the assertion of General Davis, that SamuelCarpenter came from Surrey. Mr. Carpenter soon acquired a leading position in Bridgetown, hebecame justice of the peace, and represented the Parish of St. Michaels inthe Assembly of Barbadoes. In 1683, he left Bridgetown and came to thethen infant town of Philadelphia, as appears from the following record of. His first propertyin Pennsylvania was 5,000 acres in the Welsh tract, in Union, deeded tohim March 22d, 1682. We next find him a witness to a deed of land fromthe Indians to William Penn, between Chester and Dublin Creeks, July 6, 3<D SAMUEL CARPENTER THE ELDER, 1649-1714 1685.
