Candida albicans. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the fungus Candida albicans. Rounded yeast-like cells of this fungus are seen clustered into colonies. Candida albicans occurs on moist mucous membranes of the human body such as skin folds, mouth, upper respiratory and female genital tracts. It is usually harmless, but can become pathogenic in patients suffering malnutrition, diabetes, or undergoing antibiotic treatment. Candida albicans causes the infection known as candidiasis. Oral or vaginal conditions are otherwise known as thrush. It also causes vulvo-vaginitis, a white discharge from the vagina. Magnification: x1200 at 6x7cm size. x2000 at 4x5ins
