The Metropolitan Traction Company has adopted a newrail, of the section shown in the accompanying was designed by Mr. John D. Crimmins, and is intendedto make the traffic of ordinary vehicles easier. With pre-vailing rail sections a broad, rectangular groove is madein the street, bounded on one side and the bottom by therail, and on the other side by the paving blocks. Thegauge of the track coincides with that of a great numberof vehicles, and in such a case it is very difficult to turnout without giving the wheels a severe wrench. With aslippery rail it is often well-nigh impossible to turn the vehicle, it is almost certain to engage atleast one of its wheels in these grooves, and therebyexperience to some extent the difficulty indicated. Thenew rail obviates this by a broad guard flange, which isflush with the paving blocks. The groove for the flange. CRIMMINS RAIL SECTION of the car wheel is just wide enough to accommodate it,and is too small to allow the wheels of other vehiclesto enter. The added weight makes the rail quite pon-derous, but that is no mechanical disadvantage. The railweighs 98 pounds to the yard. New York Rapid Transit. The General Term of the Supreme Court of New Yorkhas appointed Frederic R. Coudert, George Sherman andWilliam H. Gelshenen commissioners to take testimonyand submit a report as to whether the rapid transit roadsshould be built by New York City, notwithstanding thefailure of the Board of Rapid Transit Railway Commission-ers to get the required consents of property owners alonethe routes. The order gives the Commissioners 60 days toperform the work, and they are directed to advertisenotice of the time and place of their first hearing. Theorder, in accordance with the previous decision of thecourt, reserves all questions as to the constitutionality ofthe Rapid Transit act
