He had alreadyaccepted a commission in the ConfederateNavy, and soon went South, and was placedin charge of the naval defences of North Caro-lina and Virginia,with the rank of Flag was at Hatteras Inlet at the time of theattack upon Forts Clark and Hatteras, by FlagOfficer Stringham, August 28, 1861, and byrequest of the officers commanding the forts,assumed the general direction of the the surrender he was sent to New York,and remained a prisoner of war until ex-changed in 1862. During the remainder ofthe war he was in England engaged in fittingout blockade runners and privateers. The Cocrnomen of this Ancient Family hasgreatly varied in the different Countries towhich they have been traced. In New England, Buel, Buell. Bewell. InEngland, Bewelle, Bevile, Bevill and German); Buelal, Buhle, &c., all probablyof the same origin. In Spain, Bull and Name is common in France and Ger-many, where it is pronounced Beal. CountBual or Buol, of France, was probably of thisFamily. In Lebanon, Conn., where the Family wasvery numerous, the name is almost invariablyspelt Bewel. In Somers Records the nameis frequently spelt Bewell. William G. Hale, of New Orleans, furnish-ed the following in iS6S. He says : I re-collect connecting our race with the Lords ofBueil, in France, who were a branch of theGrimaldi Family, now Sovereign Princes ofMonaco, and in
