Niche containing image of the four armed Ganesha, together with a devotee carrying a banana plant, Udayagiri Caves, Vidisha, India

This carving is significant for still having traces of red paint that once covered many of the carvings at Udayagiri. The Udayagiri Caves, one of India's most important archaeological sites, are twenty rock-cut caves in Madhya Pradesh, about 57 km from Bhopal, dating from the 5th century CE. They are notable for their ancient iconography of Vaishnavism (Vishnu), Shaktism (Durga and Matrikas) and Shaivism (Shiva).
