A working pressure of 225pounds per square inch reaches about theupper limit of present-day practice inlocomotive work. The locomotive isfired with a Duplex stoker. The throt-tle is fitted with an auxiliary driftingvalve. The high tractive effort is obtainedpartly by the small diameter (51 inches)of the driving wheels, and this has ne-cessitated the placing of the low-pressurecylinders at a slight angle of 1 in 35 inorder to secure a sufficient clearanceabove the top of the rail. The Walschaerts valve motion, operatedby the Ragonnet type B reverse gear, isused for both high and low-pressure sys-tems. A close examination of the illus-tration will show, however, that themethod of radius bar suspension for thetwo gears is different.
