Immune response to an antigen (virus or pathogen) by release of immunoglobulin M (IgM), here colored in red and with a pentameric structure (snowflake shape). A virus is an infectious agent that replicates only inside the living cells of an organism. When infected, a host cell is forced to rapidly produce thousands of identical copies of the original virus, thereby causing disease. This process is usually inhibited succesfully by the immune system, but also leads to immunity to specific virus or pathogen.
