Stan Laurel (born Arthur Stanley Jefferson; June 16, 1890 – February 23, 1965) was a British comic actor, writer and director, famous as the first half of the comedy double-act Laurel and Hardy, whose career stretched from the silent films of the early 20th century until post-World War II. Stan Laurel was born in his grandparents house, 3, Argyle Street, house bears a commemorative plaque. Laurel and Hardy visited Ulverston in 1947. The statue by sculptor Graham Ibbeson, was unveiled by comedian Ken Dodd, on Sunday 2009. The statue was paid for by the fan club The Sons of the Desert, who raised £60,000 over a period of 17 years of fundraising.
