The singer has displayed the Confederate flag at some of his past concerts; protesters felt that was not an appropriate message for the arena, which was partially paid for with taxpayer dollars. During the protest, people knelt in the street while the National Anthem was played, in solidarity with NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who was the target of Kid Rock profanity after he protested American racism by refusing to stand for the National Anthem before football games. Besides concerts, the arena will house the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons teams.
