Llandaff Cathedral, West Front

An early Celtic Christian community was founded by St Dyfrig on the River Taff and a cathedral was built by St Teilo. Nothing remains of this church but in Norman times Bishop Urban started to build a new cathedral on the site and the building was almost completed by 1290. After the Reformation the cathedral gradually fell into a ruined state and was overrun by Parliamentarian troops during the Civil War. It was partly restored under the architect John Wood in the 18th century and completely restored by the middle of the 19th century by Pritchard and Seddon. The cathedral suffered a great deal of damage during the Second World War but has been gradually restored and renovated. The picture was drawn by Benjamin Baud (), architect; and engraved by Benjamin Winkles.
