Interior of Boleigh Iron Age fogou, West Penwith, Cornwall, looking NE from just inside the entrance; the indentation on the L is the entrance to a side passage or 'creep'. The fogou (earth house or souterrain) is situated within the remains of a three-acre Iron Age fort with three lines of ramparts. It is believed the fogou was a prehistoric spiritual centre used for religious ceremonies and initiations. In historical times it was associated with witches, used as a refuge by Royalists during the English Civil War, and as a store by smugglers bringing contraband from Lamorna Cove. This photograph was taken in October 1987 when the fogou was being investigated, and used for meditation & spiritual development, by CAER (the Centre for Alternative Education & Research) based at Rosemerryn House built within the fort by artist Benjamin Leader in the early 1900s. The writer Crosbie Garstin bought the house in 1928 and it features as Bosula in his book The Owls' House. The fogou, believed to be an energy accumulator, is situated on a major ley line in an area rich in prehistoric ceremonial monuments. As well as candles, the fogou contained offerings of pine cones, flowers & apples, and beads placed around a recumbent stone in the creep on the left.
