Maxillae of proboscis dark brown, heavy. Bases of maxillae i, the forceps, each with 2 longitudinal interlocking ridges; maxillae ii with 3-6 teeth; left maxilla iii with 5-8 teeth, right maxilla iii missing; left maxilla iv with 3-6 teeth; right maxilla iv with 6-10 teeth. Color: yellowish orange, brownish red, pinkish grey, with brilliant opalescent iridescence, branchiae bright red, acicula black. Biology.—Found at low water in mud, muddy sand, stiff clay, under rocks or stones, in crevices of rocks, under boards, on wooden pilings, in roots of Zostera, in oyster beds, in sponges, in old worm tubes (as Sabellaria). It is dredged on various bottoms: fine sand,.
