Austin, Texas USA, 2006: 10-month-old Hispanic baby boy cries while undergoing an upper gastrointestinal procedure at a medical imaging center. The child is made to swallow a small amount of barium (white, chalky liquid), while a doctor watches a series of fluoroscopic x-rays over approximately 15-20 minutes. The barium highlights or outlines the esophagus, throat and upper intestines allowing the doctor to view the food as it travels down the esophagus, into the stomach and into the first part of the small intestines. ©Marjorie Cotera/Daemmrich Photography
