Lavoisier's hydrogen burner. Contemporary diagram of the experiment in 1784 in which Antoine Lavoisier (1743-94) burnt hydrogen in air to produce water. The gases were sealed into the glass vessel, and an electric spark was made across the gap (d' to L). Lavoisier reported that all of the 'inflammable air' (hydrogen) and about one fifth of the common air had gone, and a dew had formed in the vessel. This he took as proof that water was a compound of hydrogen, although many assert that this had been previously shown by Cavendish (1731-1810).
