The geometrical pattern shapes of the labyrinth laid in black and white granite around the fountain, tree groups and relieves.
The combination of human beings and trees in the twenty, two meter high sculptures in the fountain area is one of Vigeland's most original concepts. The tree groups represent a romantic expression of Man's relationship to nature. They also form the setting for life's evolving stages, stretching from childhood and adolescence through adulthood to old age and death. The ground around the fountain Vigeland has formed as an 1,800 square meter mosaic in black and white granite. The geometrical pattern shapes an almost 3,000 meter long labyrinth.
