Caesarean birth. Surgeons cutting the umbilical cord (white, centre) of a baby after delivery by Caesarean section. During this procedure, the baby is delivered through an incision made in the woman's abdomen and uterus. It is performed when it is difficult or dangerous for the baby to be delivered vaginally. The umbilical cord provides the baby with oxygen and nutrients from its mother's blood whilst it is in the uterus. The baby is covered in a white substance known as vernix, which lubricates the passage through the birth canal during vaginal childbirth.
