Moab, Utah - Radioactive uranium tailings cleanup.

Moab, Utah - The Department of Energy's Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) project is removing 16 million tons of radioactive uranium tailings from the old Atlas mill site, along with the remains of old mill buildings. The mill processed uranium for nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants from 1956-1984. Scientists fear that long-term exposure could harm human health, and that a flood could contaminate the adjacent Colorado River. The tailings are being removed to a safer disposal site 30 miles away.
