Sobra, Mljet, Croatia

MLJET / NATIONAL PARK - a poet once said of the island of Mljet: Where the grace of nature has created everything better than the human know-how. The 'Adriatic pearl' is ranked among the 10 most beautiful islands in the world and it is far-famed for its cultural and historic monuments and ancient legends. In 1960 the north-western part of the island became a national park which includes two beautiful salt lakes surrounded by thick pine wods which seem to be growing out of the sea and the little Island of St. Mary situated in the heart of Great Lake with a Benedictine monastery from the 12th century. The beautifull sandy beaches, Blace Bay and the village of Saplunara which are washed by the cleanest sea, stretch in the far south-east where the nature once again surprises us with its wonderful creation of so much beauty in such a small area as the island of some 100 square km. The main port is Sobra on the island's eastern end which is connected by ferry.
