Librium (chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride), 5 mg capsules, shown with ruler for scale. Chlordiazepoxide, a depressant, is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. A depressant is a drug that depresses the function or activity of a specific part of the brain. Depressants are also occasionally referred to as "downers." Effects include anxiolysis, pain relief, sedation or somnolence, cognitive/memory impairment, as well as in some instances euphoria, dissociation, muscle relaxation, lowered blood pressure or heart rate, respiratory depression, and anticonvulsant effects; complete anesthesia or death at can result at high doses.
