St Cuthbert (c. 634 – 687) was a saint of the early church in the Celtic tradition. He was a monk, bishop and hermit and was elected Bishop of Lindisfarne at the Synod of Twyford (Alnmouth). He was reluctant to leave his island, but he was persuaded by King Egfrid of Northumbria to change his mind. In 676 he retired to Inner Farne as a the Kingdom of Northumbria in the North East of England.
