Painted Comber, Serranus scriba, from the Mediterranean Sea. This picture was taken in Xatt-L Ahmar Gozo, Malta.


This species shows a wide distribution range throughout the Mediterranean Sea and Eastern Atlantic ocean. It is generally found near rocky reefs or sea grass meadows of Posidonia oceanica. The painted comber feeds on smaller fish and crustaceans. The coloration of this species varies form light orange to red with dark brown to blueish stripes and a yellow tail fin.
