One of Bologna’s famous tourist attractions is Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune). It is a monumental water fountain and a model example of the Mannerist taste of the Italian courtly elite in the mid-sixteenth century. The monument is located on the small Piazza del Nettuno, next to the larger Palazza Maggiore. It was created by Flemish sculptor Jean de Boulogne, known as Giambologna who conceived the idea from ancient Greek-Roman statues. The Fountain of Neptune was erected between 1564 and 1566 when Pope Pius IV decided to give the Bolognesi something they did not yet have: a public fountain.
