In a bloody battle Grant had been checkmated by Leeand forced to transfer his army to Cold Harbor. Cold Harbor This battle, which terminated the Wilderness campaign, was oneover which Grant subsequently expressed regret. Despite thevaliant fighting of his army and severe loss, the great Federalcommander had failed in his plan to destroy Lee, and he sawthat he must now cross the James River and make Petersburgthe object of his activity.
