Floating homes in the Amazon Basin. Because the water level in the Amazon Basin rises markedly when the Amazon floods, buildings near the river are commonly built on stilts or are built as floating homes. These buildings are floating in the Peruvian Amazon near Iquitos. Iquitos is the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon, and one of the largest cities in the world that is not accessible by road.
