WITH a view to induciug some of the English canoeists to this year, and to secure a trial between the bestboats of each country, the New York C C. late last season offered acup for international competitions in sailing- races, and invited foreigncanoeists generally to challenge for it. The first challenge receivedwa- from the Royal C. 0. of England, the oldest canoe club in the-world, including in its list some of the most expert sailors and designersof canoes. Three of these, Messrs. W. Baden Powell, E. B. and AH. Tredwen, have been named bv the R. C. C. as its representatives,and will visit New York next month on their way to the meet, re-turning in September to race for the cup. The latter, a cut of whichwe publish by conrtesey of the American Canoeist, is a pitcher ofsilver, made by the Gorham Manufacturing Company of New York,from a design by one of their artists, M
