The planned European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is under construction in the Atacama Desert, Chile. Its construction is only possible with a segmented primary mirror. A scaled down Active Segmented Mirror (ASM) composed of sixty-one hexagonal segments (approximately 100 times smaller than of an ELT segment) is being used to study new telescope control systems. When completed, this optical/infrared telescope will have a diameter primary mirror, the largest on Earth, and will be used to study extrasolar planets, super-massive black holes and dark matter.
