Ornamental stone griffin on the facade of Petworth House. The griffin, griffon, or gryphon is a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and an eagle's talons as its front feet. Because the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. The griffin was also thought of as king of all creatures. Petworth House and Park is a 17th-century Grade I listed country house in West Sussex, England, in the United Kingdom. It is a late 17th-century Grade I listed country house, rebuilt in 1688 by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, and altered in the 1870s by Anthony Salvin. For centuries, it was the southern home for the House of Percy. Petworth is famous for its extensive art collection, containing many works by Turner and intricate carvings by Grinling Gibbons.
