Customised Vespa Scooter
A scooter rally is an event attended by scooter enthusiasts. Much like a motorcycle rally, scooter rallies usually involve: camping; going on group rides; racing; participating in gymkhana or field course events; watching bands; dancing to DJs; and drinking alcohol. In the United Kingdom, scooter rallies have existed since the early 1950s, when scooters became more popular. The two big Italian manufacturers, Piaggio Vespa and Innocenti Lambretta, encouraged scooter owners to join scooter clubs and attend rallies. During the 1960s, mods travelled on scooters to seaside resorts across Britain. In the 1970s, scootering took the form of a subculture, and scooter rallies again became popular by the late 1970s. In the 1980s, during the mod revival, scooter rallies were held around the world. Around this time, the scooterboy subculture developed. A huge number of scooter clubs sprang up and scooterists travelled all around Britain to attend massive rallies. At the same time, the scooter scene was thriving in the United States. Scooter rallies have continued through the 1990s and 2000s on a more organized scale, with attendance numbers in the UK increasing again in recent years.
