The 16 century castle ay Pylos was built to defend the town and its interior from invasion from the sea. The town is situated on the Bay of Navarino where, in1827 a naval battle took place between the English, French and Russians fleets on one side and the Ottoman fleet on the other. Navarino is said to be the last confrontation between ships with Allied fleet was victorious despite having a much smaller fleet. The Ottomans suffered huge losses to both life and ship.
