A censer, orvessel in which incense was burnt(Liv. xxix. 14.), as contradistin-guished from acerra, the box in whichit was carried to the temple, andthence taken out to be put into thecenser, or sprinkled upon the burningaltar. It was often carried in thehand by a chain, and swung to andfro for the purpose of diffusing theodoriferous vapour along the streets(Curt. viii. 9.) or through the temples(Virg.
