Charles Martin Hall, American Inventor

Statue of Charles Martin Hall which now resides on the second floor of the Oberlin College Center. Charles Martin Hall (1863-1914) was an American inventor, music enthusiast, and chemist. He is best known for his invention in 1886 of an inexpensive method for producing aluminum, which became the first metal to attain widespread use since the prehistoric discovery of iron. Hall had trouble finding backers for his process. Eventually he went to Pittsburgh, where a small group formed the Pittsburgh Reduction Company, which grew to be the first largest producer of aluminum in the United States. This company later became the Aluminum Company of America.
