Carving Lincoln on Mount Rushmore, 1936

Face of Abraham Lincoln under construction on Mount Rushmore in 1936 with Borglum monitoring the work. Lincoln's head was the most challenging because of his beard, but his head was completed on the far right of the cliff. John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum (March 25, 1867 - March 6, 1941) was a Danish-American artist and sculptor famous for creating the monumental presidents' heads at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota; the famous carving on Stone Mountain near Atlanta; and other public works of art. He died in 1941 at the age of 73. Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore near Keystone, South Dakota, featuring 60-foot replicas of the heads of four presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Construction on the memorial began in 1927, and the presidents' faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. Although the initial concept called for each president to be depicted from head to waist, lack of funding forced construction to end in late October 1941. Mount Rushmore has become an iconic symbol of the United States, and attracts over three million visitors annually. NPS, no photographer credited, 1936.
