Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Worksfor Heavy Passenger Service The Baldwin Locomotive Works has recently completedten locomotives of the Mountain (4-8-2) type for theDenver & Rio Grande \\estern. These locomotives areintended for heavy passenger service under specially se-vere operating conditions as the maximum grades arethree per cent and the sharpest curves 16 degrees. Theengines are of the three-cylinder type, and the maximumtractive force of 75,000 pounds, coupled with high steam- The three cylinders are cast separate from each other, the middle cylinder being in one piece with the front frame rails are single, measuring 6 inches inwidth by 13,2 inches in depth; and the outside cylindersare securely bolted to them, and also to the central cylin-der casting. The inside cylinder drives the second pairof wheels and the outside cylinders the third pair; andall three take high pressure steam and have cranks set. Three-Cylinder Mountain Type Locomotive fo ing capacity, ranks them among the most powerful pas-senger locomotives thus far built. One of these locomo-tives was exhibited at the A. R. A. Convention held inJune, 1926, at .Atlantic City. The boiler, apart from its large dimensions, representsno unusual features of design. It is of the conical type,92 inches in diameter at the first ring and 104 inches indiameter at the dome course. The firebox is of corre-sponding size and volume, with a grate area of feet and a combustion chamber five feet long. .\brick arch is installed, and is supported on two syphonsand three tuljes. The locomotives are fitted to burn coal, and are fired with stokers. They areequipped with feed-water heaters, five locomotives takingthe Worthington and five the Elesco. 120 degrees apart. The two outside cylinders are castfrom the same {>attern.
