Destruction of the Turkish Fleet at Navarino - October 20, 1827. This remarkable battle freed Greece from Turkish rule. Yet the Greeks took no part in it; and it was brought about by an accident. Turkey was not at war with either Russia, England, or France; yet the war vessels of the latter three nations united in fighting a Turkish fleet. The Turks had an overwhelming force in numbers and cannons; but their entire fleet was wiped out, as were the Spaniards at Manila, by the superiority of the “ men behind the guns” on the other side. —caption accompanying early 1900s illustration
