Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of salmon gill lamellae. Fish gills consist of a series of filaments covered in well-ordered lamellae which have a rich capillary network and a large surface area to maximize oxygen diffusion. Oxygen-rich water passes through the narrow channels between the lamellae and the oxygen diffuses into the capillaries. Magnification: x115 when printed at 10cm wide.
