Machair is a Gaelic word meaning fertile low lying grassy plain. This is the name given to one of the rarest habitats in Europe which only occurs on exposed western coasts of Scotland and Ireland. There are Machair habitats on the western shores throughout the islands. South Uist, and could be lost to rising Sea Levels. Benbecula and North Uist may be the first Scottish communities to suffer from the affects of climate change and rising sea-levels.
