Mimivirus. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus (APMV) particle, commonly known as the mimivirus. This virus consists of outer hairs, or fibrils (fuzzy ring), and a protein capsid (dark grey) enclosing a core (black, centre) of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the virus' genetic material. APMV's classification as a pathogen is tentative, but it is now thought that it may cause viral pneumonia. Magnification: x133,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
