Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Satellite image of the holy city of Mecca. At centre is the great mosque of al-Haram, constructed of white marble. In the middle of the courtyard is a small square building, the Kaaba or Ka'ba, which is the centre of the Islamic faith. Surrounding the Kaaba are thousands of pilgrims. This image was taken during the annual Hajj pilgrimage on 11 February, 2003. At this time, two million Muslims journey to Mecca. The city has a resident population of million (2003). This pan-sharpened image was taken by the QuickBird 1 satellite at a resolution of 60 centimetres.
