Early morning at the Vadakke Madham Brahmaswam (the Brahmaswam Madham) in Thrissur (Trichur), Kerala, India.
The Brahmaswam Madham is one of the last educational institutions in which students learn according to ancient Vedic methods. The history of the institution can be traced back approximately 500 years. The students are all Brahmins from the Namboothiri community and, during the course of the education, they learn the entire Rigveda and are able to recite it. The scholars live a strict and disciplined lifestyle. Just 32 students were studying at the Brahmaswam Madham in 2009, with seven teachers. Students get up at and retire to bed at In that time they learn sections of the Rigveda, Samveda and Yajurveda, perform yoga astanas and also have time to play and eat. Traditionally most of the students went on to become priests but recently some of the students have become successful software engineers as the education is reported to enable people to memorise large chunks of information effectively.
