Stone arch and wrought iron gates at the entrance to the grounds of the Great Hall of Oakham Castle, Oakham, Rutland, England,UK. View was taken looking back through the gateway away from the Great Hall and towards Oakham market place. The Great Hall dates from around 1190 and is one of the finest examples of Norman secular architecture of the period in England. An old custom decrees that every peer of the realm, on setting foot in the town for the first time, must present a horseshoe to be hung inside the castle. The custom has been followed for at least 500 years and as a result there are around 240 ornate horseshoes hanging on the walls inside, and two golden horseshoe emblems on the wrought iron gates.
