In the political reaction whichfollowed he was defeated for re-election, and in the followingApril he became a member of President Clevelands Cabinetas Postmaster-General of the United States. Since the closeof that administration he has given his attention to thosescholarly occupations in which he had long been distin-guished. He was regent of the Smithsonian Institute, 1884to 1888; is a member of several historical and scientific asso-ciations, and has received the degree of Doctor of Law fromvarious educational institutions.
