The execution of The Bab in Tabriz in 1850. The Báb, birth name Sayyed ʿAli Muhammad Shirāzi, 1819 – 1850. Founder of Bábism, new religious movement which signaled a break with Islam, it was however suppressed by the Iranian government, leading to the persecution and killing of between two and three thousand of his followers, called Bábís.
