Franz Hals (c. 1582–1666), born in southern Netherlands—what is today Belgium—painted this Nurse and Child.

Franz Hals (c. 1582–1666) was born in southern Netherlands—what is today Belgium. A Dutch Golden Age painter, Hals is credited as a revolutionary in the field of portraiture. He was particularly know for the way he captured light and atmosphere. This painting by Halls in 1630 is titled Nurse and Child. It is one of Hals' best. The nurse is a buxom lass of North Holland, and the Child, the son of Mijnheer Julius Ilpensteen, a wealthy German merchant, settled in Haarlem, and enagaged in tulip growing. The dress is rich, and the Mechlin lace collar is so actual that it might really be a "piece" cut off and pasted on the canvas.
