The Pennsylvania Ry. has tried screwspikes for fastening the 34-in. angle bars of 100-lb. rails to the joint were %-in. diameter over the V thread, and 6% ins. long under thehead, which was %-in. thick. They were put through holes in the anglebars, the uncut shank of the spike touching the edge of the rail base, and acast washer giving a horizontal bearing to the head.
