Their job here is to clear five acres of weeds and brambles. Ordinarily, scrub and waste are not burned, since the burning tends to harm the soil. In this instance some of the briar patches were too dense to be dealt with in any other way. Work of this sort is done on the land of any man, white or [African-American], if he will adopt certain conservation practices and is known to be a cooperator. A local priority board decides who is eligible for this service. No more than five acres are cleared on any one farm, but pasture is fenced free of charge if the operator will supply the materials. Most people disapprove of the conservation program because they think the government shouldn't tell people how to farm.
