This bronze Statue of William Webb Ellis (1806 - 1872) outside Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire was erected in 1997 in commemoration of Ellis who was a pupil at the school. In about 1823 he was playing football with his fellows when he is said to have sudddenly picked up the ball - against the rules - and run with it, thus founding the game of Rugby Football. The statue was sculpted by Graham Ibbeson.
