Military arctic survival training. Navy instructor pulling a recruit from icy water during arctic survival training in Northern Greenland. The recruit is training to become a member of the Royal Danish Navy's SIRIUS sledge patrol unit. During training, all recruits must learn to survive a fall into icy water. They must remove their skis underwater and haul themselves onto land before hypothermia sets in. Other tasks required during training include building emergency snow shelters, hunting for food, trekking on skis and driving sledgedog teams. The primary task of SIRIUS is to patrol, survey and protect Danish territory in North and Northeast Greenland.
