Abbey of San Giuliano (Spoleto).(Winter)

The Abbey of San Giuliano is located at km. 5,300 of the road that goes up from Spoleto to Monteluco, on a hill detached from the main massif, at 628 meters above sea level. The building as a whole belongs to the 12th century, but its origins are linked to the hermit movement on Monteluco which occupied the slopes of the mountain between the 5th and 6th centuries. According to tradition, Isaac, originally from Syria, arrived in Spoleto around 528, fleeing from the persecution of the emperor Anastasius, and chose Monteluco as a natural place of isolation and prayer, not far from the city. He was soon followed by other hermits who occupied cells and natural caves scattered across the mountain. A virgin named Gregoria offered Isaac her lands located on the hill, to found a monastery and a church dedicated to San Giuliano martyr[2], which would be a reference for the hermit colony. Inside, the monks who stood out for their holiness of life would have found burial, including Isaac himself[1], later venerated as Saint Isaac of Monteluco. Read more : (Spoleto)
