It was made in Italy and erected to commemorate the400th anniversary of the discovery of the American continent. THE OBELISK was presented to the city by the late Khedive of Egypt in1877. It is sixth in size of the famous Egyptian obelisks. The entire expense ofits removal and erection on its present site near the Metropolitan Museum wasborne by the late William H. Vanderbilt.
